Our PTFE NMR/EPR Tube Caps are machined to exact specifications with smaller gyroradius and more homogeneous mass distribution than disposable caps providing better spinning stability. They are recommended for experiments at high – ultra high field and those using Chloroform as the reference solution. They will only fit our Precision tubes due to the tight tolerance.

How to make sealing your NMR/ EPR tubes easy!
If you struggle preparing NMR/EPR samples of air-sensitive mixtures, there is a simpler way! Use our NMR/EPR Tube Tip-off Manifold. You’ll find vacuum transfers, freeze-pump-thaws and sample sealing easy to complete. Fuse the manifold port quickly to your vacuum rack. The chemical resistance is excellent, only Viton®, Teflon®and Pyrex®come in contact with your sample. Tube connects to a threaded aluminum bushing isolated from the vacuum by a Teflon high-vacuum rotary valve. A twist of the wrist opens and closes both the rotary valve and port bushing.

Wilmad’s Electrolytic Cell Assemblies

Study electrolytically generated radicals in aqueous solutions.

Avoid alkali metal reductions, the associated sample sensitivity to air or moisture and background signals! Never deal with a high vacuum apparatus again!

The electrochemical or coulometric generation of radicals in aqueous media has been employed successfully for years. It’s ideal for biological samples because of the control afforded by voltaic methods. Just connect Wilmad’s Electrolytic Cell to a potentiostat.

Controlled oxidation-reduction reactions can be carried out right in the EPR cavity! A complete cell includes two Calomel Reference Electrodes, a pair of Platinum Electrodes, and a gas bubbler for deoxygenation. Wilmad provides the Electrolytic Cell Assembly as a complete unit with CFQ or Suprasil®Flat Cell, or you can order components separately. Electrolytic cells are available for the TE102or TE011cavities of all spectrometers.

Components:

Flat Electrolytic Cells have two10/30 outer joints, one for the Gas Bubbler and one Platinum Electrode at the top and a single5/20 outer joint at the bottom for the other Platinum Electrode. The flat section is either CFQ or Suprasil. The remainder of the Flat Cell is CFQ. You need a minimum of 15mL of sample solution to make contact with the electrodes and gas bubbler. The cell width for JEOL spectrometers is 10mm outside; product number WG-810-J-A (-Q). For all other spectrometers, the cell width is 10.5mm outside, product number WG-810-A (-Q).

The Gas Bubbler Assembly is a three-piece Pyrex chamber which holds part of your sample. It has three10/30 outer joints at the top for the Gas Bubbler and two Calomel Electrodes. The lower10/30 inner joint fits into the top of the Flat Electrolytic Cell. Nitrogen should be bubbled through the solution before and during your experiment to remove paramagnetic oxygen and mix the sample during electrolysis; product numbers WG-810-B-1, WG-810-B-2, WG-810-G.

Platinum Electrodes are prepared using 0.016″ (0.4mm) diameter wire. The upper electrode, WG-810-C, uses 8″ (203mm) of platinum and acts as the working electrode in oxidation reactions. The lower electrode, WG-810-D, has only 2″ (50mm) of platinum and acts as the auxiliary electrode in oxidation reactions. If you add a few drops of mercury to the cell, the lower electrode can be used as the working cathode in reduction reactions. Each Platinum Electrode incorporates a Pt-to-W weld. The tungsten (W) external wire lets you quickly clip your potentiostat leads to the electrode.

Electrolysis Limits in Water (vs. Saturated Calomel Electrode)

Calomel Electrodes are included in two lengths, one 13″ (330mm) and the other 83/4” (222mm). Connect your potentiostat to the half cell at a tungsten wire that penetrates the electrode wall. Add mercury in the outer chamber to a height that makes contact with the tungsten lead. Each electrode provided with a stopper. Not supplied with mercury. Electrolytes sold separately.

Wilmad Electrolytic Cell Assemblies

TIP: An electrolytic cell designed by Prof. Robert Allendorfer of SUNY, Buffalo and sold by Bruker Instruments offers improved sensitivity using a cylindrical TM110cavity. Its use is recommended when sample sensitivity is low.

Remember: Wilmad uses “-Q” to designate versions using Suprasil in the critical portions of the cell. All other cells are prepared from Clear Fused Quartz (CFQ).

Flat Electrolytic Cells

Electrode Reference Solutions and Cleaners

Calomel Reference Electrodes utilize a 3M potassium Chloride (KCl) solution saturated with Silver Chloride (AgCl). Use it to fill or replace reference solution in any pH or other electrode which incorporates a Calomel Reference.

In addition, we provide cleaning solutions which can be used to remove specific surface contaminants from your reference electrode junction.

Replacement Parts for VT Systems

Need a replacement component for your variable temperature system?
Since Wilmad offers VT replacement components at prices significantly lower than the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), why pay more? Wilmad components are equivalent or, in some cases, better in quality than you get from your EPR Spectrometer manufacturer.

You’ll get the best performance possible with Wilmad transfer dewars. Most are silvered for maximum thermal insulation. Where it has been possible, Wilmad transfer dewars are fully vacuum-jacketed, right to the end of socket and ball joints, so you get the most stable temperatures.
Bruker VT Transfer Dewar
The Bruker ER 4121 VT Variable Temperature System includes a long transfer dewar and a heater that goes inside it. The diameter and length of the heater and the transfer dewar has varied over the years, so choosing the right size dewar for your system was a real challenge.
Wilmad has made replacing the transfer dewar simple, though. Working closely with Bruker, we’ve developed two designs which work with all Bruker VT systems. The long version, WG-842-MX, works with all Bruker EPR spectrometers with magnets > 18 cm diameter. The shorter one works with all smaller magnets.

Wilmad’s versions of these transfer dewars are better than Bruker’s. We add a hollow ball joint for better thermal stability.

Only Wilmad makes a replacement for Varian’s E-257 Immersion Transfer Dewar!

Fully compatible with Varian’s E-257 VT System, this Immersion Transfer Dewar, Wilmad’s product number WG-760, incorporates a Kovar flange that fits the heat exchanger. It works better than the original transfer dewar of your VT System because it connects to the elbow transfer dewar through a jacketed socket.

This Elbow Transfer Dewar is better than the original you got from Varian!

You’ll get better performance with Wilmad’s WG-840 series of Elbow Transfer Dewars. That’s because we’ve redesigned the dewar to include a jacketed ball joint, so your cold carrier gas stays cold! No frosting!

It’s made with hooks that let you firmly hold the ball in the socket of the immersion transfer dewar (Wilmad’s product number WG-760) with springs.

You won’t need to rearrange your laboratory, either. Wilmad’s Elbow Transfer Dewars are available in three lengths, so you can choose the one that’s best for your setup. Call us for custom lengths.

Is the height of your replacement or new Nitrogen Evaporator Dewar too high or short for your VT setup? No problem. Wilmad has a solution. Our Bridge Transfer Dewar, WG-843, makes adjusting the flow path of your VT carrier gas easy!

Ideal for Bruker VT systems. Just turn the Evaporator Dewar Head around, place the Bridge Transfer Dewar between your long transfer and the Evaporator Dewar, and you cover the new angle.

This special transfer dewar can save you money and headaches. No custom manufacturing charges for a specially designed replacement part.

Large Nitrogen Dewar Flasks

Want the easiest way to take your samples to liquid nitrogen temperatures?
Dewar Flasks provide you with a convenient alternative to VT systems for studies at -195°C. Wilmad makes flasks for almost all common cavity resonators including those requiring reservoirs “off-set” from the center axis. Use these for cavities with iris controls near the Dewar Flask reservoir. Select either Clear Fused Quartz (CFQ) or Suprasil “cold-fingers.” All Dewar Flasks are silvered about the reservoir. Each Dewar Flask is shipped with protective nylon meshing.

Large 150mL Dewar Flasks
For longer experiments (25-45 minute sample immersion), part number WG-853 series are for resonators requiring reservoirs ‘off-set’ from the center axis.

Small 50mL Dewar Flasks
When you have plenty of sample signal and experiments take only 15-25 minutes, these small Dewar Flasks are ideal. They can handle up to 4mm OD sample tubes or solid samples mounted onto the end of 4mm OD quartz rods. WG-819s are for resonators requiring reservoirs ‘off-set’ from the center axis.

Technical Tip:
Keeping Dewar Flask reservoirs and “cold-fingers” clean will extend the hold time by reducing the rate of nitrogen boil.

Liquid Nitrogen Dewar Flask

These Aqueous Cells are unique due to the shape of the fill tubes. With their hexagonal outer surface, these special cells make alignment easier to reproduce. Can be used with a goniometer.

NOTE: Cell product numbers that include the letter “S” indicate that optically polished flat windows are joined to the polished wall ends via a special thermal fusion technique to form an ultra high precision bore flat cell. The two windows are parallel to each other within several visible light wave numbers. These items are recommended for EPR experiments coupled with optical techniques.

JEOL Aqueous Cells

The Universal Cavity operates in TE011mode which requires a certain type of aqueous cell for a JEOL spectrometer. Prepared from special thin Suprasil plates, sample thickness is 0.4mm for the WG-LC-11 and 0.3mm for the WG-LC-12.

NOTE: For samples of 50µL or less, please use the capillary sample tubes found Capillary Tubes for JEOL Spectrometers.

Variable Temperature Aqueous Cells

Wilmad uses “-Q” to designate quartzware using Suprasil in the critical portions of the cell. All other cells are prepared from Clear Fused Quartz (CFQ).

NOTE: Cell product numbers that include the letter “S” indicate that optically polished flat windows are joined to the polished wall ends via a special thermal fusion technique to form an ultra high precision bore flat cell. The two windows are parallel to each other within several visible light wave numbers. These items are recommended for EPR experiments coupled with optical techniques.

Small Volume TE102Variable Temperature Aqueous Cell
The WG-808 VT Aqueous Cell works with most common VT Dewar Inserts, including WG-821(-X) and WG-848. It has a small volume, so use it only with samples that give a strong signal.

***Special Note: Not recommended for contemporary EPR.

Large Volume TM110Variable Temperature Aqueous Cell
For insensitive samples, larger volumes are needed for sufficient sensitivity. With newer spectrometers, use WG-813-TMS-S(-Q).

Tissue Sample Cells

Aqueous Sample Cells can only be used when your liquid sample can be pulled into the cell using a vacuum. If your samples are viscous, try Wilmad’s tissue cells! Tissue Sample Cells are ideal for studying wet tissues and polymers, e.g. epithelial slices, using EPR.

If you study fast reactions involving free radical intermediates, then you know how difficult it is to capture or “trap” a spectrum of your sample. Flow cells have proven effective in producing a “steady-state” concentration of many reactive intermediates in a microwave cavity resonator.

Quartz Coverplates
All coverplates are 1.6 mm thick and have notches for the support clips used to hold the coverplate in place. They are available in CFQ, Suprasil or TPX plastic**, so you can match the Tissue Cell you already have.

TPX Coverplates
TPX coverplates can be used with water-based samples that must be degassed, e.g. for ELDOR or ST experiments. TPX is highly permeable to O2, N2, and CO2. Equilibrate your sample with a stream over the coverslip. Avoid using organic solvents with TPX plastic.

Replacement Stoppers for Aqueous Cells
If you lose or break a plastic or glass stopper, we can get you replacements quickly. We recommend you stock a few extras. Your experiments should never be halted for lack of a simple quartz or plastic stopper.

Need to seal an EPR tube to your vacuum rack?
Some EPR samples are air-sensitive. Since oxygen is paramagnetic, many EPR samples are best studied after degassing. For long-term storage, no other closure is better, but most vacuum racks incorporate Pyrex components. Sealing quartz to Pyrex is a problem, unless you use sample tubes that incorporate a graded seal. Order Wilmad’s Graded Seal/Constricted EPR Tubes, available in a variety of sizes. Other configurations can be prepared, so if you don’t see the size you need, contact us about price and availabiility

J. Young EPR Sample Tubes, Valves and Pistons

Wilmad’s J. Young valved sample tubes make difficult samples easy to study. No wonder they’ve become so popular in NMR. Now, you get the same advantages in EPR studies!

It’s a real bargain, too! One tube handles:

The J. Young Valve EPR Tube saves time. No greasy joints to fuss with. Connect it quickly to your vacuum rack. Opens and closes with a quick twist of the wrist. We can add the valve atop any Wilmad EPR sample tube 5mm OD or larger. A graded seal is used to connect the Pyrex portion of the valve to a quartz EPR tube. Two sizes of the valve are available. One is ideal for 5mm tubes, the other for 10mm tubes. One is right for most every EPR sample tube you get from Wilmad.

Replacement pistons and vacuum adapters are sold separately. If you should break the tube, but not the thread, it can be repaired at a cost that’s lower than a new one.

*PTFE/Rubber – Laminated discs consisting of a sheath of Teflon®bonded chemically to white pharmaceutical rubber. Inert to most solvents and many corrosives. Not recommended for multiple punctures.

PTFE/Silicone – Laminated discs consisting of a Teflon®sheath bonded chemically to silicone rubber. Inert to most organic solvents and compounds; however, not recommmended for use with strongly corrosive materials. Resealability properties of silicone rubber are excellent.

Capillary Tubes for JEOL Spectrometers

Recommended for use when small aqueous samples are studied using JEOL’s standard TE011cylindrical cavity resonator, these sample “cells” are more durable and easier to handle because of their heavy wall construction (OD = 4.0mm). Made from the highest quality synthetic Suprasil quartz, these capillary cells provide excellent performance at temperatures from 5 to 100°C. You’ll find these cells are fully compatible with JEOL’s tube caps and collet for 4mm OD tubes.

These JEOL capillary sample tubes are used with collet adapters. Collets not included. They are available here:

Quartz and Suprasil Capillary Tubes

Conveniently packaged in vials of 25, 50, and 75 pieces, Wilmad Clear Fused Quartz and Suprasil capillary tubes are often used in EPR applications where sample sizes are limited. Available in sizes from 0.40 to 2.4mm OD, these fine tubes are 100mm long and open on both ends. Easy to seal with a hot flame, you can use them with a round bottom or close with a sealant of your choice (beeswax is commonly used.)

Only by making a tapered joint seal with the Dewar Insert is it possible to achieve the highest temperatures with Dewar Insert for Bruker’s ER4114HT Cavity Resonator. Wilmad makes a unique sample tube for use with this special dewar insert. Consisting of a 6mm OD tube that tapers to a 4mm OD below a7/15 inner joint, this tube is prepared with CFQ.
