Wilmad’s Electrolytic Cell Assemblies

Study electrolytically generated radicals in aqueous solutions.

Avoid alkali metal reductions, the associated sample sensitivity to air or moisture and background signals! Never deal with a high vacuum apparatus again!

The electrochemical or coulometric generation of radicals in aqueous media has been employed successfully for years. It’s ideal for biological samples because of the control afforded by voltaic methods. Just connect Wilmad’s Electrolytic Cell to a potentiostat.

Controlled oxidation-reduction reactions can be carried out right in the EPR cavity! A complete cell includes two Calomel Reference Electrodes, a pair of Platinum Electrodes, and a gas bubbler for deoxygenation. Wilmad provides the Electrolytic Cell Assembly as a complete unit with CFQ or Suprasil®Flat Cell, or you can order components separately. Electrolytic cells are available for the TE102or TE011cavities of all spectrometers.

Components:

Flat Electrolytic Cells have two10/30 outer joints, one for the Gas Bubbler and one Platinum Electrode at the top and a single5/20 outer joint at the bottom for the other Platinum Electrode. The flat section is either CFQ or Suprasil. The remainder of the Flat Cell is CFQ. You need a minimum of 15mL of sample solution to make contact with the electrodes and gas bubbler. The cell width for JEOL spectrometers is 10mm outside; product number WG-810-J-A (-Q). For all other spectrometers, the cell width is 10.5mm outside, product number WG-810-A (-Q).

The Gas Bubbler Assembly is a three-piece Pyrex chamber which holds part of your sample. It has three10/30 outer joints at the top for the Gas Bubbler and two Calomel Electrodes. The lower10/30 inner joint fits into the top of the Flat Electrolytic Cell. Nitrogen should be bubbled through the solution before and during your experiment to remove paramagnetic oxygen and mix the sample during electrolysis; product numbers WG-810-B-1, WG-810-B-2, WG-810-G.

Platinum Electrodes are prepared using 0.016″ (0.4mm) diameter wire. The upper electrode, WG-810-C, uses 8″ (203mm) of platinum and acts as the working electrode in oxidation reactions. The lower electrode, WG-810-D, has only 2″ (50mm) of platinum and acts as the auxiliary electrode in oxidation reactions. If you add a few drops of mercury to the cell, the lower electrode can be used as the working cathode in reduction reactions. Each Platinum Electrode incorporates a Pt-to-W weld. The tungsten (W) external wire lets you quickly clip your potentiostat leads to the electrode.

Electrolysis Limits in Water (vs. Saturated Calomel Electrode)

Calomel Electrodes are included in two lengths, one 13″ (330mm) and the other 83/4” (222mm). Connect your potentiostat to the half cell at a tungsten wire that penetrates the electrode wall. Add mercury in the outer chamber to a height that makes contact with the tungsten lead. Each electrode provided with a stopper. Not supplied with mercury. Electrolytes sold separately.

Wilmad Electrolytic Cell Assemblies

TIP: An electrolytic cell designed by Prof. Robert Allendorfer of SUNY, Buffalo and sold by Bruker Instruments offers improved sensitivity using a cylindrical TM110cavity. Its use is recommended when sample sensitivity is low.

Remember: Wilmad uses “-Q” to designate versions using Suprasil in the critical portions of the cell. All other cells are prepared from Clear Fused Quartz (CFQ).

Remember: Like many Quartz products for EPR, Electrolytic Cell components can often be repaired for costs that are less than new components. Contact Customer Service to ask about this service.

Electrode Reference Solutions and Cleaners

Calomel Reference Electrodes utilize a 3M potassium Chloride (KCl) solution saturated with Silver Chloride (AgCl). Use it to fill or replace reference solution in any pH or other electrode which incorporates a Calomel Reference.

In addition, we provide cleaning solutions which can be used to remove specific surface contaminants from your reference electrode junction.
